Blood pressure measuring instrument is called sphygmomanometer. This instrument consists of an inflated rubber cuff which is put on to the arm and attached to the mercury column next to graduated scale.

The sphygmomanometer measures blood pressure in terms of systolic and diastolic reading numbers. Upper reading is called systolic and lower reading is called diastolic. Following are some reading ranges of blood pressure:

  • Normal: Less than 120 over 80 (120/80)
  • High blood pressure: 120-139 over 80-89 (120-139/80-89)
  • Stage 1 high blood pressure: 140-159 over 90-99 (140-159/90-99)
  • Stage 2 high blood pressure: 160 and above over 100 and above (160/100)

Causes of High Blood Pressure:

High blood pressure is also called hypertension and is dangerous because the heart has to pump more forcefully to flow the blood than normal which can lead to failure of the heart. Following are the causes of high blood pressure:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Too much salt in the diet
  • Too much alcohol consumption (more than 1 to 2 drinks per day)
  • Stress
  • Older age
  • Genetics
  • Family history of high blood pressure
  • Chronic kidney disease

Study:

This latest study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition which exposed that daily intake of dairy products can serve as a safeguard for high blood pressure.
Dairy products include milk, yogurt, curd, custard, porridge, coffee creamer and all kind of cheese products.
The researchers are interested in whether the hypertension in older cases is associated with uptake of different products. For this, they have experimented on almost 2,245 adults aged 55-56 years or older and recorded their dietary data.

After analyzing data, researchers concluded that those whose intake includes dairy products have dropped off chances of developing High blood pressure.

*Intake of dairy products can lessen the hazard of hypertension, but they can’t fully prevent one from developing high blood pressure. This can be only better the situation.
