How to Make a Turbine Engine Easy Science Projects
In the following article is described a machine which anyone can make, and which will be very interesting, as well as useful. It can be made without the use of a lathe, or other tools usually out of reach of the amateur mechanic. It is neat and efficient, and a model for speed and power. Babbitt metal is the material used in its construction, being cast in wooden molds. The casing for the wheel is cast in halves—a fact which must be kept in mind.
First, procure a planed pine board 1 by 12 in. by 12 ft. long. Cut off six pieces 12 in. square, and, with a compass saw, cut out one piece as shown in Fig. 1, following the dotted lines, leaving the lug a, and the projections B and b to be cut out with a pocket knife. Make the lug 1/4 in. deep, and the projections B, b, 1/2 in. deep. The entire cut should be slightly beveled.

Now take another piece of wood, and cut out a wheel, as shown in Fig. 2. This also should be slightly beveled. When it is finished, place it on one of the square pieces of wood, with the largest side down, then place the square piece out of which Fig. 1 was cut, around the wheel, with the open side down. (We shall call that side of a mold out of which a casting is drawn, the "open" side.) Place it so that it is even at the edge with the under square piece and place the wheel so that the space between the wheel and the other piece of wood is an even 1/8 in. all the way around. Then nail the wheel down firmly, and tack the other piece slightly.

Be careful to keep these holes well out in the solid part, as shown by the black dots in Fig. 1. Take the mold apart, and clean all the shavings out of it; then bolt it together, and lay it away to dry.

Now take another of the 12-in. square pieces of wood, and cut it out as shown in Fig. 4, slightly beveled. After it is finished, place it between two of the 12-in. square pieces of wood, one of which should have a 3/8-in. hole bored through its center. Then bolt together with six 1/4-in. bolts, as shown by the black dots in Fig. 4, and lay it away to dry. This is mold No.2. Now take mold No.1; see that the bolts are all tight; lay it on a level place, and pour babbitt metal into it, until it is full. Let it stand for half an hour, then loosen the bolts and remove the casting.

Now cut out one of the 12-in.-square pieces of wood as shown in Fig. 5. This is the same as Fig. 1, only the one is left-handed, the other right-handed. Put this together in mold No.1, instead of the right-handed piece; and run in babbitt metal again. The casting thus made will face together with the casting previously made.
Pour metal into mold No.2. This will cast a paddle-wheel, which is intended to turn inside of the casting already made.
If there should happen to be any holes or spots, where the casting did not fill out, fill them by placing a small piece of wood with a hole in it, over the defective part, and pouring metal in to fill it up.

If you cannot obtain the use of a drill press, take an ordinary brace, fasten a 3/8-in. drill in it, and bore a hole through the end of a strip about 2 in. wide and 16 in. long; put the top of the brace through this hole, and fasten the other end of the strip to a bench, as shown in illustration. Find the center of the paddle-wheel, place it under the drill, true it up with a square; and drill it entirely through. Find the centers of the insides of the other two castings, and drill them in the same manner.
A piece of mild steel 5 in. long, and 3/8-in. in diameter must now be obtained. This is for a shaft. Commencing 1-1/2 in. from the one end, file the shaft off flat for a distance of 1 in. Then cut a slot in the paddle-wheel, and place the shaft inside of the paddlewheel, with the flat part of the shaft turned to face the slot in the wheel. Pour metal into the slot to key the wheel on to the shaft.
The paddle-wheel is now ready to be fitted inside of the casing. It may be necessary to file some of the ends off the paddles, in order to let the paddle-wheel go into the casing. After it is fitted in, so that it will turn easily, place the entire machine in a vise, and bore three 1/4-in. holes, one in the lug, one in the projections, B, b, and the other in the base, as shown by the black dots in Fig. 6. Also bore the port-hole in projection B, and the exhaust hole in projection b, and two 1/4-in. holes at d, d, Fig. 6. Cut out a piece of gasket and fit it between the two castings. Then bolt the castings together, screw down, and connect to the boiler.

Using the Brace
The reader must either cast a pulley out of babbitt metal, or else go to a machinist and get a collar turned, with a boss and a set screw, and with three small screw holes around the edge. Cut out a small wood wheel and screw the collar fast to it, fasten it to the shaft of the turbine and turn on the steam. Then take a knife or a chisel, and, while it is running at full speed, turn the wheel to the shape desired.
Your turbine engine is now ready for work, and if instructions have been carefully followed, will do good service.

10 Ways to help Children Understand Anzac Day
To many Australians, Anzac Day is a special day of the year. The name Anzac, which stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps, was the name given to the service man and women who represented Australia during war times. Anzac day, which is the 25th of April, marks the first military engagement of Australian and New Zealand soldiers at the landing of Gallipoli. Anzac day not only is a day to remember those who fought and the lives that were lost, but it is also a time for Australians to reflect and remember ALL the service men and women who have fought bravely for the freedom of our country.

Each year, my children have done a number of activities which have slowly helped them understand the story behind Anzac day and the importance of it (you can read about what we did last year when Learning about Anzac Day). So I thought I would share some of these ways to give you ideas for helping your own children/students understand Anzac Day.
1. Baking Anzac Biscuits
The simple Anzac biscuit has become a tradition in our house as it has long been since associated with the original Anzacs. Legend has it that the Aussie wives/sisters/mothers would bake these biscuits and sent them to their husbands/brothers/fathers who were fighting at the war front. This beautiful picture book, Anzac Biscuits by Phil Cummings and Owen Swan, has helped us learn more about the legend behind these biscuits and the connection between the soldiers and their families.

2. Anzac Day Crafts
Last year my children painted some Red Poppies. Although Red Poppies are a symbol of Remembrance Day, it was the first plant life to spring up on the devastated battle fields in Europe where the Anzacs had fought. If painting is not your thing, here is a free Red Poppie craft that you can download and make.

3. Reading Stories
Sharing picture books with my children is another way that we learn about Anzac Day. One of our favourite stories is about Simpson and his Donkey as it is a story of bravery and honour. Only a Donkey is written by Celeste Walters and Patricia Mullins.

4. Dawn Service
A Dawn Service is held all across the country each Anzac day in remembrance of the dawn landing at Gallopoli in 1915. As my children have gotten older, we have taken them to the dawn services where they hear The Last Post being played, poems and names of service men and women who have served our country and see the Australia flag fly at half mast.
This lovely picture book, My Grandad Marches on Anzac Day by Catriona Hoy and Benjamin Johnson, is a story told by a little girl and how she sees Anzac Day, starting with the dawn service. This book looks at the connection between families and memories and helped us understand the significance of the dawn service.
5. Local Military Memorial
Dawn services are usually held at local memorials. You will find that most towns in Australia have military memorials that are in honour of past serving men and women who had lived in that region. Having lived and travelled in many different places around Australia, our children have seen a number of Military Memorials in different places. I would encourage you to take your children to visit your local memorial.
6. Anzac Day March
Every Anzac Day in every capital city and small towns around Australia there is an Anzac Day march. This is a time for all past and present serving service men and women as well as family members of the fallen, to participate in the march to remember those who fought for our country. Attending an Anzac Day march is a wonderful way for children to make that connection with what they have learnt about.
This beautiful picture book, My Grandad Marches on Anzac Dayby Glenda Kane and Lisa Allen, shares the connection between a young boy and a elderly war veteran during an Anzac Day parade. We have read this book to understand more about the significant of the parade and those that march in it.
7. Australian War Memorial
Although it may not be possible for everyone, if you ever get the chance to take your children to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, then you should do so. My son was just seven years old when we went but he enjoyed seeing all the artifacts and historical pieces that are on display there. However, it was the Roll of Honour that took my son by surprise. Seeing the walls filled with names of all the serving men and women who have died for Australias freedom made their sacrifices real and emotional.

8. Letters to Troops
Anzac Day is not just about past service men and women but also about those who are actively deployed around the world today. The recently military involvement with Australian troops will see some children grow up without their Dads, Uncles and Brothers. It is important to remember and support the serving men and women who are deployed in peacekeeping operations overseas and you can do this by getting involved with Postcards To The Troops.
9. Visit Your Local RSL
The Returned and Service League of Australia started as a direct result from 1914-1918 war from the Australian Diggers mateship. You can get in contact with your local RSL and talk with local veterans who have served Australia and can share stories and experiences with your children.
10. Watch Documentaries/Movies
Watching documentaries and movies on Australians at war is not an activity for young children but older children (maybe 12 years plus) would find this activity educational in their understanding of the Anzac. There are some Australian War Movies for Anzac Day that may interest your older children.
11. Support Legacy
The voluntary organisation known as Legacy, is dedicated to caring for the families of deceased and incapacitated veterans. Getting involved with Legacy is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and support those who have scarified so much. So why not get your children involved in this community volunteer work. You can Get Involved with this wonderful organisation by fundraising for Legacy, sponsorship, become a volunteer, workplace giving and/or purchasing merchandise from your local Woolworths.

Google just used its Search app to sneak most of Chrome OS onto the iPad

Great news from Google highlighted in an article from Matthew Panzarino over at TheNextWeb. I have had a play with this app and love it. It is super clean and so nice to use. I love that I can incorporate all my pictures, google docs and other google tools so easily on my iPad.

With the announcement of its new Search app, Google gave iPad users more than just a slick and well-made native search app that bests the experience on any Android tablet. It also managed to squeeze the core elements of Chrome OS into Apple’s ecosystem.
Note that I say core elements, because there are aspects of Chrome OS that are obviously not represented here, but it is definitely a huge step in the right direction.
When you launch the new Google Search app, you’ll notice right away that there is a huge difference between it and the much maligned gmail app for iOS. The Gmail app uses a webview for its main component, which in the world of iOS apps is the equivalent of being lazy.
But I have it on good authority that the team that built this app is a completely separate endeavor. What I don’t know, but suspect, is that the team within Google that built this app has ties to the Chrome OS team.
The Search app is built using native controls, which give it a silky smooth operation and that feeling of quickness that doesn’t come easily to an app that is built on a thinly wrapped webview. It also means that you’re greeted with an interface immediately, rather than waiting for a webpage to load.
But the main feature of the app, which is really a simple and gorgeous implementation of Google Search, isn’t the most interesting bit here. To find that, just tap on the Applications button on the main screen.

Whats It Like to Be a Fish? is a 32 page illustrated book about fish. The book starts off with some simplistic yet beautiful illustrations of various fish including the Veiltail Goldfish and the Lakes Whitefish. The illustrations are a fun way to start off the book. After that it starts talking about different environments fish live in like a pond and aquarium. As the book goes on, they continue to show the different varieties of fish.
The introduction to the fishes habitats are amazing and very cute for children. The text is simple and easy to follow. It is at this point of the book, the author starts talking more about fish. Included in the book are some fun facts like what makes a fish different form a person. The also talk about the fishes scales and the coating found on them.
If that is not interesting enough, the book includes different diets like what humans eat versus what a fish can eat. The book then compares what is is like to live in the while versus a fish tank. The end of the book includes a small list for any child looking to start their own fish tank.

Cons:
- Some of the pages have a lot of text so you might have to modify it for younger children interested in learning about fish.
Suggestions:
- This book has a list of how to care for a fish, so what better way to care for a fish then to get your child a fish. If you have room, get a 10 gallon tank and point out the different species to your child and ask them which ones the want. If you have limited space then a beta will do. Caring for a fish can be both fun and educational. The child will not only learn about fish but also responsibility like feeding and cleaning the tank.
- This is for the more artsy children, but you can make a fish habitat. Start off with a shoe box and ask your child if you want to learn about fresh or saltwater fish. After that line the tank with blue tissue paper with water. With pieces of construction paper, start making a habitat based on the location you chose. You can add seaweed, sand, rocks, and then the fish. This is a great hands on way for your child to show what he knows.
